Ready for college? We are!

UC San Diego TRIO Outreach Programs houses five federally funded TRIO programs, including Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science and Talent Search.  We also host one college-ready program in collaboration with San Diego Unified School District, for military dependent students.  Our goal is to prepare students to successfully complete high school, transition to the college of their choice and succeed in graduating with a two-year, four-year or vocational/technical degree. These free college ready services are targeted towards low-income, first generation students who aspire to attend college immediately after high school graduation. Collectively, we serve more than 900 students in 13 schools across San Diego County. 

Schools Served: Sweetwater, Chula Vista, Southwest, Mar Vista, Lincoln, San Diego, Serra, Hoover, Mission Bay, Clairemont, Mount Miguel, Monte Vista, El Cajon and Mountain Empire high schools

Services Provided to Eligible Students: tutoring or connections to tutoring, workshops, field trips, college tours, summer programs, college advising, mentorship, college entrance exam preparation, college and career planning, assistance with completing college applications, assistance with completing FAFSA, information on financial literacy and information on college scholarships.

Upward Bound

The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees and careers in the math and science profession. The Upward Bound Math Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students.

Talent Search

‚ÄčThe goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling and encourages participants to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assists students with the postsecondary application process.

Build up

Build Up is a free, pre-college mentorship program for Canyon Hills High School students who are interested in attending college immediately after high school graduation, including a 4-year or 2-year college or university. Build Up is a joint effort from SD Unified School District and UC San Diego, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity. Students whose parents/guardians are serving in the military will have priority consideration in their application.
