DESCRIPTION

The mission of the UCSD TRIO Outreach Program is to increase the post secondary matriculation of low income, first generation college students. Approximately 950 San Diego County students are served from five U.S. Department of Education grants.

Under close supervision of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialists, uses K-14 academic preparation professional concepts and practices by working with assigned sites to implement academic preparation programs.

Serve as Head Staff in Summer Residential Program. Act as office manager for fast paced residential area with over 150 students, 10 RAs, 20 teachers, 15 tutors and 8 Head Staff. Communicate and provide information and resources to students and parents. Plan and implement program events. Coordinate with on campus and off campus vendors. Supervise and chaperone students.

Responsible for administrative and logistical support for all aspects of summer programs. Serve as the Summer Program Head Staff. Responsibilities include: monitor keys for residential housing, coordinate classrooms, rent vehicles, set up office, manage electronics, cart and vehicle keys. Serve as the primary point of contact for summer program logistics for all career staff, teachers, student staff, students and parents. Frequent and constant communication to tutors, office staff, RAs, Head Staff and Director. May be asked to live on-site during summer residential program.

Maintains relationship with parents / families to support student academic success and access to higher education. Responsible for communicating to parents and families during program check in and check out. Support program staff in parent meetings, orientations and program events. Maintains relationships with higher education institutions and community entities.

Delivers basic college-going workshops, curriculum, materials, and activities. Develops and implements summer programming for 150 students across all TRIO U.S. Department of Education grants. Assist with planning college tours for participants. College tours are typically 4 days in length and travel is from San Diego to Los Angeles or Northern California. Develop program fliers and outreach material, reserve venues, order food, make copies of materials.

  • Evening hours, overtime and weekends are required. May be asked to live in residential area during summer program. Must be willing to provide own transportation to San Diego County school sites.

DESCRIPTION

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced training and development professional to resolve a wide range of training issues and needs assessments. Develops new training programs and works on complex training courses of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering training and development programs. Classroom teaching experience preferred.

Trainers develop curriculum for specific academic subject areas as outlined in the TRIO federal grant, including math (basic algebra - advanced calculus), composition and literature, science with a lab or foreign language. Provide classroom academic enrichment to high school youth and in-class tutor training.

Trainers are expected to provide professional development in a 1-1 setting with tutors on a weekly basis. Trainers use experience working in diverse communities with low income, first-generation college-bound youth, to develop training modules for young professionals to gain and develop tutoring skills as part of the Upward Bound summer program. Academic content is delivered directly to students in a classroom setting.

  • For Science we are looking for someone that can teach a lab component with your subject; any science subject, preferably one not taught in the high schools, must have a lab; Past class examples: Volcanoes, Electromagnetism, Fluid Mechanics, Plant Biology, Marine Life, Sea Turtles, Drug Design, Computer Science
  • For Foreign Language we are looking for someone that can teach be innovative and emphasize cultural understanding and basic introduction to the language
  • For Composition and Literature (English) we are looking for someone that can teach creative writing, including with an ethnic studies emphasis or argumentative writing.
  • For Math we are looking for someone that can teach Integrated II/III combo class, PreCalculus, Calculus or Statistics.

DESCRIPTION

EAOP and TRIO are seeking motivated and enthusiastic staff who can act as program chaperones, mentors, and tutors in academic summer courses. Due to the fast-paced nature of the summer program, and the extensive federal requirements and objectives of our summer academic courses, tutors play a vital role in ensuring high school students remain motivated and engaged in academic learning. Tutors are assigned to work with specific academic programs and provide tutoring in a variety of academic subjects, including Math (Int. Math II – Calculus), Composition and Literature, Science, and Foreign Language.
Tutors are required to monitor and supervise approximately 15 - 30 high school students during English, College Seminar, Foreign Language, Math, and Science courses. Proficiency in high school level math and science is a priority consideration in our hiring selection process. Tutors are expected to actively participate in class and assist instructors with lessons. Tutors will meet weekly with instructors for feedback and skills-building lessons. Tutors may be asked to lead large group lectures or facilitate small group discussions. All tutors will be expected to represent UCSD therefore professionalism and cross-cultural competency are essential when communicating with students, parents, teachers, and program staff. 
 
Tutors must be reliable and arrive on time to all assigned hours. Tutors must be comfortable with enforcing rules with minors, addressing behavior concerns with students, and leading student activities. Tutors will report back daily on student attendance, behavior issues, and academic progress on struggling students. Tutors assigned to work at UCSD will participate in the Summer Food Services Program and will monitor participants during lunch. Tutors must have strong oral communication skills. Tutors are responsible for frequent communication with supervisors, especially as it pertains to their role in monitoring students’ progress.

DESCRIPTION

RA's will be asked to share their knowledge of college life through the planning and implementation of various workshops or activities for all program participants. RA's will independently facilitate nightly suite meetings with their group of minor participants. RA's will be required to discuss the topic assigned and must be able to engage all participants in the discussion, ask clarifying questions, reflect back comments, and re-direct the conversation as needed. As a result, effective oral and interpersonal skills are extremely important to this position. During designated study time, RA’s will be required to provide academic advice and support for students upon request of such support.
 
RA's will interact on a daily basis with minor participants from low-income, first-generation backgrounds. As a result, knowledge of and experience working with this population are required. As a resident in the dorm area, RA’s will be in frequent contact with a variety of staff and will be expected to interact with respect, diplomacy, and tact with all office staff, teachers, tutors, Head Staff, parents, and university personnel. RA's act as mentors and are expected to behave as strong role models during the program. Bilingual in Spanish is an asset as this reflects the students and parents interacting during the program.  
 
The RA position, due to its live-in nature, requires a willingness to be on call at any time of the night in order to meet students’ needs as they arise. Therefore, professionalism, consistency, and conflict management skills are of the utmost importance. Each RA will be assigned to overnight supervision of a suite of 9 to 11 high school students ranging in age (14 to 17) and grade (rising 9th to rising 12th).
  • Must reside in residential dorms with assigned students Sunday – Thursday nights.
  • RA position includes 3 meals at dining halls and dorm stay during residential program.
  • 8 hours of holiday pay in addition to regular work hours will be allocated on July 4th.
  • Additional hours will be allocated for meal supervision during breakfast and lunch (optional).
  • RA Training Dates: June 20th – 23rd at UC San Diego campus (housing and meals not included)
 RAs are expected to maintain strict professional boundaries with students, implement conflict resolution strategies, remind participants of program rules, and immediately report any instances of suspected child abuse or neglect (per CANRA policies). Communication with minor participants after the program ends is strictly prohibited.
