The mission of the UCSD TRIO Outreach Program is to increase the post secondary matriculation of low income, first generation college students. Approximately 950 San Diego County students are served from five U.S. Department of Education grants.
Under close supervision of higher-level K-14 Academic Preparation Specialists, uses K-14 academic preparation professional concepts and practices by working with assigned sites to implement academic preparation programs.
Serve as Head Staff in Summer Residential Program. Act as office manager for fast paced residential area with over 150 students, 10 RAs, 20 teachers, 15 tutors and 8 Head Staff. Communicate and provide information and resources to students and parents. Plan and implement program events. Coordinate with on campus and off campus vendors. Supervise and chaperone students.
Responsible for administrative and logistical support for all aspects of summer programs. Serve as the Summer Program Head Staff. Responsibilities include: monitor keys for residential housing, coordinate classrooms, rent vehicles, set up office, manage electronics, cart and vehicle keys. Serve as the primary point of contact for summer program logistics for all career staff, teachers, student staff, students and parents. Frequent and constant communication to tutors, office staff, RAs, Head Staff and Director. May be asked to live on-site during summer residential program.
Maintains relationship with parents / families to support student academic success and access to higher education. Responsible for communicating to parents and families during program check in and check out. Support program staff in parent meetings, orientations and program events. Maintains relationships with higher education institutions and community entities.
Delivers basic college-going workshops, curriculum, materials, and activities. Develops and implements summer programming for 150 students across all TRIO U.S. Department of Education grants. Assist with planning college tours for participants. College tours are typically 4 days in length and travel is from San Diego to Los Angeles or Northern California. Develop program fliers and outreach material, reserve venues, order food, make copies of materials.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced training and development professional to resolve a wide range of training issues and needs assessments. Develops new training programs and works on complex training courses of diverse scope. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering training and development programs. Classroom teaching experience preferred.
Trainers develop curriculum for specific academic subject areas as outlined in the TRIO federal grant, including math (basic algebra - advanced calculus), composition and literature, science with a lab or foreign language. Provide classroom academic enrichment to high school youth and in-class tutor training.
Trainers are expected to provide professional development in a 1-1 setting with tutors on a weekly basis. Trainers use experience working in diverse communities with low income, first-generation college-bound youth, to develop training modules for young professionals to gain and develop tutoring skills as part of the Upward Bound summer program. Academic content is delivered directly to students in a classroom setting.
