TRIO Outreach Programs at UC San Diego offers five federally funded, pre-college programs: two Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science programs for San Diego Unified School District central high schools and Grossmont Union High School District high schools, and theTalent Search program.
Our goal is to prepare students to successfully complete high school, transition to the college of their choice and succeed in graduating with a two-year, four-year or vocational/technical degree. TRIO Outreach Programs are targeted to low-income, first generation students who aspire to attend college immediately after high school graduation. Collectively, we serve more than 875 students in13 schools across San Diego County.
Upward Bound: The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.
Upward Bound Math Science: The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees and careers in the math and science profession. The Upward Bound Math Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students.
Talent Search: The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling and encourages participants to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assists students with the postsecondary application process.
The history of TRIO is progressive. It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the Johnson Administration's War on Poverty. In 1965, Talent Search, the second outreach program, was created as part of the Higher Education Act. In 1968, Student Support Services, which was originally known as Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, was authorized by the Higher Education Amendments and became the third in a series of educational opportunity programs. By the late 1960's, the term "TRIO" was coined to describe these federal programs.
